(Liberty Bell) – The Washington DC swamp has become inundated with greedy, power-hungry career politicians who make millions of dollars “serving” the public. Once people make it to Washington it seems they quickly forget about the people who elected them and start working for their own interests.
Over the course of decades, politicians like Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Joe Biden have amassed huge fortunes. A wealthy political class with a struggling middle-class is the trademark of high-level corruption.
It’s long past time for term limits on members of Congress. Not only should it be a crime for politicians to use their offices as get-rich-quick opportunities but term limits are needed to ensure the future of America.
We’ve seen firsthand the kind of politicians that have been bred by the ability to be endlessly re-elected and it’s literally destroying this country.
Fortunately not all in Congress are corrupt. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has introduced a constitutional amendment that would impose term limits for Congress.
The legislation, introduced Monday and obtained by the Daily Caller, would limit US Senators to two six-year terms and members of the US House of Representatives to three two-year terms after the date of its enactment.
“Term limits are critical to fixing what’s wrong with Washington, D.C. The Founding Fathers envisioned a government of citizen legislators who would serve for a few years and return home, not a government run by a small group of special interests and lifelong, permanently entrenched politicians who prey upon the brokenness of Washington to govern in a manner that is totally unaccountable to the American people,” Cruz commented before introducing the constitutional amendment.
“Terms limits brings about accountability that is long overdue and I urge my colleagues to advance this amendment along to the states so that it may be quickly ratified and become a constitutional amendment,” Cruz added.
The legislation has 10 co-sponsors including Sens. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Todd Young (R-Ind.), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), and Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.).
This is exactly what our country needs to begin rooting out the corruption in the DC swamp. Of course, don’t count on Democrats to work against their own interests. It’s been obvious for years that the Democrats have long forgotten who they are elected to serve.
Because this is an amendment to the constitution it requires two-thirds support in both the House and the Senate along with the approval of three out of every four states. That’s going to be a tall order especially with the GOP only holding a slim majority in the House.
The fact that getting this amendment passed in Congress is a long shot is just further proof that the politicians in DC are corrupt. The difficulty in getting this amendment approved is affirmation of just how badly the country needs it.
